Harddance
Harddance includes genres like Hardstyle, Hardhouse, Hard NRG, Hardtrance, Jump and (arguably) Hands Up and Donk/Hardbass/Scouse/Bounce House. That may seem like a lot of styles under one roof but the 4/4 hard kick and the high energy is the uniter. It's truly party music and there's quite a few bronies making it (so spin that harddance Vinyl Scratch).

Hardcore
Hardcore is several things: it's frantic, fast and it feels like an intense caffeine-fueled ride. It has a few subgenres underneath it, so whether you know it as the 'old skool father' of drum & bass, happy hardcore, uk style, speedcore, pico pop, or even breakcore, you'll know it's intense, fast, and often hard. How hard? Well it's not hardcore for nothing...

Downtempo
Downtempo may have a variety of names ranging from ambient (with beats or beatless), chill-out, and even instrumental hip-hop, but it has a shared sound. It's often slower-paced, gentle, relaxing, and sometimes trippy.

Trance
Nothing comes closer to the feeling of flight than trance. With its slow builds, arpeggiators and breakdowns, there's always a feeling or rising and falling with the music. Its hypnotic approach leads to its name and we just know that Dash is a big fan of it. Make sure to check out the State of Brony Radio show (old mixtapes and newer ones with Hmage) for all brony tracks that are Trance.

Hip-Hop / Rap
In the beginning there may have not been a lot of rappers bringing hip-hop to the community, but after a few winter rap-offs and a few well known rappers that have emerged, we've seen quite a lot more hip-hop make it into our scene. We even see the occasional wub drop, electronic, or rock accompaniment for an mc on the mic, so you'll likely find quite a bit of variety of style as well.

Orchestral
Orchestral seems to be the preferred word for classical music made with a computer and is sometimes also known as bgm music (background music). Classical is almost as old as music itself (well you know what i mean) and it also allows for a musician to sound like a whole symphony through ornate compositions. There are a surprising amount of brony musicians who specialize in this field of music and they are some of our most revered musical members of our community.

Experimental
Experimental is kind of a catch-all term for those who go for unconventional techniques that are noisy and often atonal. Whether they are advanced atonal and aleatoric techniques, or someone just messing around with sounds and ideas, they are definitely trying hard to often not fit in with the crowd. Whether that chaos creates discord or is seen as its own great masterpiece is often up to beholder or to those who appreciate such music that's just a little different then the rest.

Electro
We've decided that while electro is often part of the house genre we have enough brony musicians that embrace these dark stabbing basslines that it deserves it's own category on BMD. Whether it's everchanging complex electro (ie complextro), energy fueled electro house, or gentler vocal and often autotuned electropop, you'll find plenty of bronies adoring and making it.

Genre Section
Well we are introducing a new section and a functional addition to the site. While searches have always been beneficial on this site we are making them even easier by creating a genres section and creating links to great music and musicians that fit under them. While these genres below are major genres and many with several subgenres under them, we want to at least try to cover some major groups of brony music we see, and make it easier to find such music by those who specialize in certain styles. Now many artists (such as myself) often jump around from style to style and this may not help you find all those artists as they need to have a genre mentioned in our blog write-up for them to be found in searches. Some artists too may not yet have that as part of their write-up so we may be doing some editing to get you better results based on your feedback. Your feedback on both genre and artist entries will dictate how this site functions on searches, and these are just a highlight of many of the most used parent genres while many smaller ones are grouped and recorded on the Pony Fan Genre List. We hope you find good use of this and that you find the time to give your favorite picks for each genre as a way to recommend your favorite brony music tracks by style and genre and to find more great music out there.

Jazz
Jazz is a genre that took rather long time to make its way into the brony community and is one of the oldest genres. Well, it's here to stay and some bronies are doing a wonderful job at it. While its use of a horn section is one of its most redeeming values, there's actually a load of ways and instruments that can be used, but ultimately improvisation is the key. Like classical music it may not be for everyone, but it's smashing to listen to at a cocktail party with your dad as it caters to a sophisticated musical taste. Give it a chance and you'll find that just about any music could use a little more sax.

Metal
Metal is divisive; you either love it or you don't. It won't take crap from you. A handful of artists truly think that metal is magic and bring an intensity and loudness to pony music that will likely get the blood in your veins pumping hard. Crank your volume up and listen to these guys while you air guitar at home.

IDM
IDM is one of those genre names that was likely designed by a troll. "Intelligent dance music" is the kind of term that gets most electronic fans upset and while there's a level of "it's art", it rarely is truly dance music, as it's intended for listening purposes, is often off-beat and intentionally strange. Whether it means you're intelligent for liking it is up for debate, but if you do then you'll find it fascinating (and maybe you'll be a bit clumsy on the dance floor).

Rock
While we're giving acoustic rock and metal their own little subsections, rock is otherwise a rather large genre with a lot of diversity. Whether it's rock, alternative, post-rock, or with a slice of pop flavor to it, we think you'll find quite a bit of guitar-led tracks from the brony community even if electronic still rules the roost.

House
House is one the longest running and most diverse genre of electronic dance music. While you can lump a ton of artists under it you could also look at its many subgenres for true detail and to see that some bronies specialize in a particular flavor. From the sample-heavy french house (Silva Hound), electro house (Archie V), and the trancy / progressive house (SimGretina), you could find lot of variation and different approaches with its '4 to the floor' action. You'll find it's fabulous and one of the most popular genres everypony should know.

Country
As popular as country music is in the United States and with one of the mane 6 a devout fan, you would think we'd have much more country and southern rock themed music to honor Applejack. Then again it took awhile to see Jaazz enter the community, so perhaps we'll see more come out soon.
Until then you can find quite a bit of scattered country music in the blog from the link here.

Acoustic
While Acoustic may not be a true genre, it's definitely a popular style in the brony music community. Stripped down acoustic guitar or piano; it's minimal, often gentle and mellow, and it's full of emotion (and every once in a while it's actually produced with a DAW and VSTs despite the sound). Whether it's classified as folk, singer / songwriter, or just a simple instrumental, you'll find quite a bit of great acoustic pieces in the brony community.

Remix Wars
What brought the mylittleremix site together (as home to hundreds of MLP artists) was a set of remix competitions called Remix Wars
(originating in June 2011) which resulted in 4 rounds of community
remixes over several months where the community openly collaborated with
each other remixing each other's work. This spirit continues to this
day with many great tracks continuing to get the remix treatment by new
and old artists.

Round V - Genre Swap
“Let me fix your music”
The purpose of this event is just the same as the last four - this time around it’s very simple: find a song made by another musician in the community that you like and remix/rewrite it in your own preferred style and genre. This remix war will be different in that only ONE remix will be accepted per person due to the large amount of submissions we expect. You can participate in one remix and one collab total."
Completion date - September 1st.

Dubstep
Dubstep is one today's most popular major electronic genres and has been for over a decade. While it's far removed from where it started in the uk and now centers less on dubs and more on wubs, it's much more popular than when it started. It still has that halfstep that gives it a vague hip-hop/uk garage feel, and while some claim it as rather stupid and clumsy in its musical approach, there's a load of people who love it and will rush to its aid when it's attacked (like Derpy!!).

Drum & Bass
Drum & Bass has been around since the mid 90's (when it was originally known as jungle) and there's plenty of variety now with liquid, neurofunk, classic, and modern styles (with a few wubs thrown in). These fast breakbeats and dominant basslines have plenty of power and attitude to boast about. You might want some breakcore or drumstep too so check the links for some of that.

Chiptune
Chiptune is music at it's simplest form and is a retro nod through 8-bit emulators to the video game music of the past. While it may seem simple and small in form it's often more complex to make then other's will give credit to it. You'll see a large handful of chiptune covers in the brony community so seek it out and you shall find some great music outside of the arcade.

Radio
A great way to listen to new and unheard of tracks via streaming channels and weekly episodes and podcasts. For musicians it's just another place to recommend submitting your music to reach a larger audience.
NEWS
Please check out our new brony music news blog: FimMusic. It's a blog that I'm running which will spend a lot of our focus on the mylittleremix forum and the events and conversations going on there. Likewise other musicians I know who dont go to mlr anymore would like to be informed of events going on there as well. But I also want to be talking about what is going on in the community outside of mlr too and really conversing with a lot of people who care about where we are headed and spotlighting a lot of great musicians still making music today.
We hope you tune in to a blog that's very concerned in making music about ponies fun and fair again and we hope you subscribe and stay tuned for it's launch very shortly.
