Well the comments and tumblr comments of who i missed keep coming in. I'm editing as quick as i can. Bear with me!
ReplyDeleteCould you please ffs stop encouraging more popularity contest bullshit?
ReplyDeleteI agree completely. It's not about the numbers, it's about the musicianship.
DeleteThis is statistical, how are you going to rate everyone coming from different genres, musical experiences, ect? Subscribers provide a source for amount of fans and therefore the caliber of musical quality. Yeah there might be some unknown guys that are better than people on the list but how can you measure talent without being baised?
Deletethere isn't a way to do that, that's why this list is so fucking retarded.
DeleteTake a look at how it's structured and presented. It literally implies that those with more subscribers are better, but if you take a look at the avergae narrow minded brony, you'll notice that most of them are attracted to generic, mediocre music, propably because it gets farted out by some musicians everyday because they don't give a single fuck about putting some effort into music and improving the production quality (prime example: Tombstone's babs seed remix).
Honestly there's no reason to get butthurt by such a list. NO ONE IS SAYING that anyone is better than any other, its just putting a list together based on the only unbiased criteria that anyone can show (ytube subs). If anything it should remind people to sub people you DO like and who make the effort. There's a lot of people who work hard for their music who couldn't make the list because people don't subscribe enough. That simple. No need to start drama or arguments. These are just stats.
DeleteCall me butthurt all you want, it still doesn't change the fact that you failed miserably at supporting your self-claimed goal with this list.
DeleteAlso there are unbiased criteria like production quality or arrangement.
calling youtube subs unbiased is a joke
Okay how would you do it then lol
DeleteI didn't fail at all. I displayed where the community stacks up its artists based on the way that most people seem to measure it (popularity). I'm not to blame for why the community seems to put some above others. The fact that Tomb is #1 and SGAP is #26 speaks volumes to me but i'm not going to rig the results. The community voted with their subscription buttons.
DeleteI dono't see why people are making a big deal about this. its just a list.
DeleteI don't get it either. We didn't make any claims about musicianship in making this list. All we did was give an overview of the best known ones. Getting angry at statistics isn't going to do anything.
DeleteWhy not just call it what it is: A list of the most subbed brony musicians on youtube? "Top Brony Musicians" definitely suggests "best."
DeleteNot in my opinion. In this context, all it means is "most influential/important ones". Which is definitely based on sub/follower count.
DeleteI for one agree with LoreRD.
DeleteNot necessarily. Popularity does not always relate with influence. For example, take the Velvet Underground, one of the if not the most influential Rock group of all time. They were never all too that popular, but as the quote goes "Velvet Underground only sold a few thousand albums, but everyone who bought one started a band. "
DeleteAt this point.... popularity has changed to almost always relate to influence, or at least short-term influence. Since the brony fandom is recent, all we can measure is short term influence, which is what I intended in the initial post (in this context...), unlike your example of The Velvet Underground, whose influence became noticed only after quite a while. And the internet didn't exist back then. If it did, I'd guess they would've been more popular.
DeleteNowadays, almost always, things become influential and popular through sharing on the internet. If something's influential, especially in the short-term, people know about it.
Since we're talking about the brony fandom, let me ask you this: do you think that anyone under 1,000 subscribers (if that) has any actual influence on this music community as a whole? (once again, think about context)
Well I know until recently there was some people who were very influential on the community like Sci who weren't above 1000 subscribers, but they are now. Anyway, while popularity generally corresponds with influence I don't think the order perfectly matches, for example I believe NotACleverPony is more influential than her subscriber count suggests, and while Tombstone is the most popular by far he isn't nearly as influential as his popularity suggests, with Glaze and Alex S definitely being more influential. Also, if you want to talk about influence and popularity they are have never quite been intertwined as much as you suggest even now. Pop artists are very popular, but they have little influence due to a lack of innovation. Meanwhile the most influential artists tend to be very popular within a certain domain and often the most popular artists in their respective genres, but aren't the most absolutely popular musicians overall.
DeleteThere aren't enough musicians to "objectively" decide if e.g. Tomb is more influential tan Glaze or Alex S. And NotACleverPony had an incredibly high subscriber count for a very long time. She hasn't made any music in over a year and still is in the top 40. That should speak for itself. Also, I've been in musician's chatrooms where a lot of the more recent musicians have no idea who NaCP is. So I think it still stands.
DeleteI can't believe Tarby is so low in the standings. He is one of the best brony musicians in the world yet not enough people are aware of him it seems. Many of the top musicians site him as a rock god that they want to collab with too. I suggest everyone check him out.
ReplyDeleteGood point, he is the chosen one!! All hail the Tarby Jesus!!
DeleteAgreed. Tarby is best pony. Either most brines have no taste in music (possible by the blandness of some of the explanations I see coming out of them and the apparent restrictiveness of musical taste) or EQD is creating some sort of conspiracing to keep certain artists popular.
DeleteThere is no such thing as "the best brony musician". All subjective.
DeleteAgreed. But it's still worth keeping track of this sort of thing.
DeleteThis comment has been removed by a blog administrator.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe Ponyphonic is on that low... Also where's BronyMike he has got 4,058 subs.
ReplyDeleteponyphonic has 3 videos and 7,200 subs. that's kind of ridiculous that they are that high but props to them regardless. I would put bronymike up there with yaplap as more a brony celebrity than musician tbh.
DeleteAre you planning on putting musicians that have under 1000 subs or would that be too much?
ReplyDeleteOh look. We're in high school kiddies. Popularity clearly means a person is "better" now, huh? (And don't try to say it's based entirely on statistics, if it was get rid of the labels that say the most popular people are the essential gods of the community.)
ReplyDeleteHoly shit stop over-analyzing this! It's not that big of a deal! And I mean how the hell would you rate a whole community of artists with different styles/genres then without being biased? You can't! Personally I find these stats informative and it's interesting to see who ranks where as far as subscribers go. But seriously stop living in a fantasy world were unknown people magically float up to the top of the list. Popularity IS everything (aka the real world) These folks have a bunch of subs for a reason, if they threw out shitty music they wouldn't have any fans.
DeleteYou're missing eXtaticus, too.
ReplyDeleteHe makes some fantastic eurobeat; some would say that he's as good as (if not better than) the likes of Eurobeat Brony and Stormwolf.
Wait...
he's got 221 subs, he's got a way to go (like a lot of us) before he hits 1,000+. sorry.
DeleteHoping to solve some questions and answer the disappointment of some people (which is understandable):
ReplyDeleteYes we did base our "top" list on the amount of subscriber they have on youtube, and yes we do know that it's not a legitimately good way of basing a list on.
But it's the best we could do, obviously if we did a list with our own preferences or had a voting people would be like "Alex S is only in top of the votes because he posted on his youtube to go vote for him!!!!111!!!1111!!!11" or "Wow did you really put SoGreatAndPowerful in #1? you're so retarded, she isn't even close to the level of tombstone, glaze etc".
Thing like these limits us to pure statistics, and there hasn't been any Brony musicians world cup (because it would be extremely hard to get a fair contest) yet so we couldn't base anything upon stuff like that.
We had to do it with youtube subs and we know it's not the best approach, some of you might say a voting might've been better but keep in mind:
1. Our following isn't that huge.
2. If our following was really big and this list actually mattered it might have caused an even bigger popularity contest with people posting to their fans to come vote etc.
3. We're all lazy (except for freewave) =]
If you have something you want to say in terms of feedback and how we would go on about doing this next time, please post in the comments below, we take feedback seriously and we're always looking to improve!
Much love -LFP

ReplyDeleteThis is just a suggestion. Don't take anything i say as being offensive. I was reading these comments and i agree, this is the crapiest way to make a list of brony musicians (All though it is the only unbiased way... so far) I think i may have come up with a slightly time consuming way to remake the list (Slightly time consuming but i believe it will be more effective then the previous way). You send a mass message to all brony muscians to select one song that they have made. They send you their one song, and you place all of the songs on one page. Then you have people come on and listen to the songs one at a time. At the end of each song they will mark the song on a scale of 1 to 10 on how well it was made and weither they liked it. After a set number of days you count up the votes and declare the winner and list them all. (Obviously you will have to make it so only people regestered can vote only once so to stop someone from voting multiple times on a song, but i believe this will eleminate most of the biasness from the list. You could place the least known musicans at the top of the voting list so they get more exposure)This is just my opinion and it is a very Time Consuming process bu it is the only way i can think of for holding a near un-biased vote.
-Blue Thunder
Assuming everyone sent a song in, that would be a MASSIVE amount of music to go through and listen to. Too much to make an accurate poll out of. Even if we could somehow pull that off, they would essentially be voting for the song, not the artist.
DeleteAs it is, it's an organized list of musicians ordered by popularity based on an easily-measurable factor - Youtube subscriptions - and nothing more. In no way are we trying to say "this guy is better than this guy". Interesting idea, and we appreciate you trying to help us improve on the list, but not something we're up for at the moment.
What zero said, + the fact that it's insanely hard to get out a reply from any of the bigger musicians because they already get so many messages :\
Deletelike it said it would be time consuming and the only way I can see of making an accurate vote. However in this form it is an impossable task.
DeleteNo. This would not work in any way (see what Zero said). A lot of musicians have much more variety in styles and genres than just one song. Look at Kyoga. Does he choose to submit his dark ambient stuff, or his guitar instrumentals? Or Peak Freak? He could choose to submit one of his rock tracks, but he can't make that stuff anymore, so it's not an accurate picture of what he can do.
DeleteAnd more popular artists will STILL get higher marks, because more people will be familiar with their work and vote according to their discography, and will likely vote based on their favorite track (also, they have actual FANS who will be biased), compared to lesser know musicians who get voted only based on that one track.
And that's even assuming that we'd get enough people to vote to even receive some kind of result. And it would be an ENORMOUS undertaking considering that there are 200+ artists.
Thanks for trying to help out, but this idea really just doesn't work.
Holy hell, why so much butthurt over this? This is not a list of "THE BEST 1337 BRONY MUSICIANS OMGAWD", it's an organized list of brony musicians based on subscriber count. There seriously isn't anything wrong with that, so just build a bridge and get over it.
ReplyDeleteAnyways, it looks like you missed EHT with 1,131 subs.
Also: It looks like you're counting the subs from my old channel (xGiveMeUrLifex). I only have 1,117 on my new one (SonicBreakbeat). Thanks!
DeleteWhere's Renard?! XD
ReplyDeleteI don't think he's made any brony music, so he's not on the list. If I missed him releasing any pony tracks, be sure to link them, though.

Galactic Dancing doesn't seem to exist anymore, but that made EqD in early 2011
Ignore that last part; I'm an idiot. Galactic Dancing appears to be the name of his page EqD linked to. The track was Rainbow Dash Likes Girls
DeleteReplacer and Feather have more now.
ReplyDeleteMost of the people on this list have more now. In fact, the list goes slightly out of date less than a day after it gets updated. However, I'm a pretty busy and can't update it every single time someone gets more subscribers. Hence the reason I added the "updated Feb 9th" at the end. I'll update the list around the time when Mic hits 50k.
DeleteThe only exception is when I find out that someone is missing from the list, in which case I add them immediately.
DeleteWhere is Megaphoric? She has over 2000 subs...
ReplyDeleteCntrl-F = find, she was sitting at #85 ;)
DeleteCherax Destructor also hit 1k recently.
ReplyDeleteEile and Feather have more now.
ReplyDeleteUpdated the original thread rather than having a new one. New updated comments from December 2013 on will be here.
ReplyDeleteJust a note i hate having dead links and missing profile so I will try to have profiles added for Vinyl Scratch, Twitch, Ponyphonic, TuXe, Poni1Kenobi, Megaphoric, PhonyBrony, MelodicPony
ReplyDeleteLectro Dub, Muffoxx, Michael Pallante, VivaceCapriccioso, SMOR3S, BronyOff, UndreamedPanic, Yoka the Changeling, Undefined Variable, SerenaMidori, LilyCloudVA, MusicalPony/Colour District, ESPPony

1,181 PegaSix
Need to add Slendermane 2,040
ReplyDeletehttps://www.youtube.com/user/LeonTheRabbit1/about
SlyphStorm: 2437 Subs
ReplyDeleteVocalScorePony: 1296 Subs
It looks like you missed 4EverfreeBrony, who has 1,785 subscribers: http://www.youtube.com/user/4everfreebrony
ReplyDeleteIt also looks like you guys missed Sonic Rainboom, it's a shame his music gets overlooked so often; he would be an Earth Pony with 245 subscribers: http://www.youtube.com/user/originalph00tbag
(He really does make some good music, and I think he could use some more attention)
That said, thanks for putting this list together, you guys!
How could you forget JackTHerbert? He has 39,583 subscribers! I know he uploads a lot of other stuff besides music and that's where most of his subs came from but you've got others on the list that do other things too. I think he's got more than enough songs to his name for him not to be counted on the list.
ReplyDeleteI guess we can add him as he does show SOME songs listed in aplylsit below, With nearly 40,000 subs that really does throw off the #'s as about almost all his traffic is due to other things then music. Again the main reason why people aren't on bmd these days is because they simply don't submit a profile themselves!

ReplyDelete1450 subs

ReplyDelete2,900 subs
all the people who were missing last time have been added today!
ReplyDeleteI broke 1,000 subscribers earlier this month. Just a heads up.
ReplyDeleteAre you guys updating this? :P
ReplyDeleteOnce or twice a year....we may update this for the summer since we are at the half way mark.
ReplyDeleteThat would be great. I'm looking forward for update :)
ReplyDeleteI dont see SimGretina
ReplyDeleteits at the top (near)
DeletePonytronic, Tif Whitney, Pandora Typography, Speedcore Dave, Faux Snyder, and FritzyBeat are all past 1K now
ReplyDeleteJastrian https://www.youtube.com/user/jastrian
ReplyDeleteI think Derpydety / Kind Tide should be considered "inactive", as he didn't post any pony track for over a year xP
ReplyDeleteHe had a collab with AndTheRainfall this year that was pony inspired. On there on a technicality basically....
DeleteThe most tragic thing about this list is that HeyLasFas's sub count of 940 is still too low for him to even be on it. If the creator of motherfucking DESTINY (not to mention NIGHTFALL), who's been doing this since 2010, can't even get onto this list, what purpose does it even serve other than to showcase that we as a community are not doing a good enough job of directing people to the really good music?
ReplyDeleteI agree completely. I'm stunned they are not on the list yet and there's a ton of musicians for no rhyme or reason aren't on here yet. What it does show is we as fellow musicians and brony music fans need to support the ACTIVE brony musicians making great music today.
Delete"Someone made a list, we were all feeling bitter
ReplyDeleteTill Tara Strong said to stop it on Twitter."
Will you compile a list of the "top brony songs of 2014" like you've done in previous years?
ReplyDeleteCan you add Wubcake?
ReplyDeleteWait, what about Ponytronic, Tif Whitney, Pandora Typography, Speedcore Dave, Faux Snyder,FritzyBeat, etc.
ReplyDeleteout of those we missed ponytronic, pandora is a visual artist not a musical one, and we got the rest on there.
ReplyDelete
